Rose Hoban, a long-time health journalist who founded and now leads North Carolina Health News, has written an AHCJ tip sheet chock full of resources about both rural health and social determinants of health.

The resource guide grows out of her presentation at Health Journalism 2019 in Baltimore last spring in which she provided both an overview of some national trends in rural health, and also dived into some innovations in communities around the country.

Her tip sheet has information on both community collaboratives, such as an effort in the Columbia Gorge area along the Oregon-Washington border, as well as national initiatives that are taking fresh approaches to addressing both coverage and larger issues about health and well-being, including food insecurity and the lack of affordable housing.

As you scroll through them, think about who is doing similarly creative silo-busting health work in your community – or go find them. And if you can’t find anyone – start asking why not.
